What is Italian Music?

Italian is known as “the language of love” — or, in Italian — “la lingua di amore!” This expressive, romantic language has produced some of the most memorable and celebrated love songs of all time. Popular Italian love songs include “Innamorata (Sweetheart),” “Amore, Scusami (Excuse Me, Love),” “Viene Su (Say You Love Me, Too),” “Ritorna-Me (Return to Me),” and “O Solo Mio.”
The music of Italy is diverse and eclectic. It is a broad spectrum, ranging from opera and classical music to contemporary popular music. Instrumental and vocal music has always been one of the hallmarks of the Italian cultural identity. In addition, Italy has contributed significantly to the world of music with improvements to musical scales, harmony, notation and theatre. Italy’s noteworthy contributions to these areas have helped to develop the opera and a great deal of European classical music, including the concerto and the symphony.
Italy’s fairly recent history includes the development and expansion of opera, which has spread internationally, and the development of the Gregorian chant and musical notation.
The opera is a greatly significant part of Italian culture and is a major area of popular music. The “canzone Napoletana,” or Neapolitan song, and the cantautori singer-songwriter traditions are also popular domestic styles that form an integral part of the Italian music industry. In addition, Italian audiences enjoy imported music such as Jazz and Rock and Roll.
Folk music is another highly important aspect of Italy’s musical identity. It encompasses a wide array of regional styles, instruments and dances. Conservatories, opera houses, radio and television stations, recording studios, musical festivals, and musicological research support professional musicians.
