|| || || || What is Gypsy Music?Nomadic by nature, the Gypsies — or “Roma” — often include traveling entertainers. Fiddles often accompany gypsy music, and the music provides great entertainment, as was the intention of the traveling gypsy. Lautari is the Romanian term for a Roma musician. Many lautari traveled with string bands called taraf. Taraf usually included fiddles, cymbaloms, accordions, and double bass. This style of music is still popular across Romania. Rhajastani Roma music, from India (where Roma are said to have originated), incorporates the fiddle as well. Roma are said to have migrated from India westward in waves from before 1000 CE. By 1050 CE, many Roma had made it to Constantinople, where they traveled and entertained. Roma exist today in India, the Middle East, and everywhere from Turkey to the Balkan States, where the music is still changing and evolving. Manele is a type of music made popular by Roma in the Balkan States, especially in Romania. Nuances of popular music are incorporated and blended with traditional Gypsy music. Traditional dances accompany Gypsy music, which is used to celebrate many joyous occasions. Click here to book Gypsy Music for your event!
