|| || || || What is Classical Music?Classical Music composers that most people know include Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Fryderyk Chopin, and Ludwig Van Beethoven. Modern-day composers and artists include Leonard Bernstein, Philip Glass, Trans Siberian Orchestra, and even Frank Zappa! Although most people have a general idea of what Classical Music is, many do not understand the breadth of time and styles the term Classical Music encompasses. In fact, the term spans over 700 years and many different styles of music, including symphony, opera, choral, chamber music, orchestra, the madrigal, Gregorian chant, and the Mass. It is helpful to think of Classical Music as a generic term that applies to a wide variety of music. Webster’s dictionary defines Classical Music as, “of, relating to, or being music in the educated European tradition that includes such forms as art song, chamber music, opera, and symphony as distinguished from folk or popular music or jazz.” Musical historians classify Classical Music into six different movements, defined by stylistic variations. The breadth of Classical Music can be intimidating. However, once you find Classical Music that you enjoy, stick with it and let that piece of music be your starting point. From there you can explore similar types of music by different composers, and move on to other styles of Classical Music. In Mozart’s biography, the author states: “The masterpieces of the Romans and Greeks please more and more through repeated reading, and as one’s taste is refined — the same is true for both expert and amateur with respect to the hearing of Mozart’s music [or classical music].” Due to its timeless quality and the sense of ceremony it conveys, Classical Music is often played at weddings and other events.
